Creating a Shadoof

During the Spring term, Year 5 recreated an Ancient Egyptian invention: the shadoof. The shadoof was an early tool used in irrigation by the ancient Egyptians who lived along the Nile River. It was used to lift water from a river or lake onto land or into another river or lake. The pupils investigated the function of the shadoof and looked closely at how they were built, before constructing their own functional shadoofs in small groups. The children thoroughly enjoyed the project.
